Portland's New Tax Could Cost Truckers Millions

Portland, Oregon is planning to introduce a new tax, named the Portland Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, which will cause truckers to pay millions collectively to help maintain roads.

With this tax, Portland estimates bringing in approximately $2.5 million from truckers by adding a 2.8% increase to the weight-mile fee that they’re currently paying. The extra income will directly fund the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

So what does this mean for you? Based upon a fact sheet provided during the proposal, “a business that paid $10,000 in Oregon weight-mile taxes would be assessed an annual Heavy Vehicle Use Tax of $280.”

This comes in addition to a 10 cent gas tax that is also being put in place, but was chosen over a diesel tax as officials feared that this may cause truckers to skip fueling up in Portland.
