How to Stay Healthy on the Road

The average driver can log between 2,000 and 3,000 miles a week! So if you thought driving 20 miles to work each day was bad, try doing that 17 times! So when truckers are spending so much time on the road, it’s understandable that they might have a hard time eating right and staying healthy.

If you’re in the habit of going through the drive-through for breakfast, getting diner food for lunch and dinner, and having processed snacks in the truck with you, it’s time to make a change for the benefit of your health! But how? You have deadlines to meet and paychecks to get.

The hardest part of living on the road is finding healthy food to eat. With so many fast food restaurants, often within minutes of each other, it’s easy to go with fast and easy. But after days of eating high-calorie, high-fat meals, it will take a toll on your body. Here’s what you can do:

  • Stock up on foods at a grocery store: With the help of a medium sized cooler, that you can keep cool with bags of ice, you can store apples, carrots, cheese, and other temperature sensitive foods that will give your body some nutrients.

  • Keep other health foods with you: Snacking is something even non-truckers struggle with. But having the right snacks can make all the difference. Keep a bag of almonds and other nuts, a jar of fat-free peanut butter that you can dip apples into, jerky, or even popcorn.

  • Keep water with you: The last thing you want is to be thirsty while on the road and there are several benefits of staying hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help cleanse your body and flush out toxins that can harm your body. Water will keep your body cool, which will be helpful when you’re driving through the deserts of Nevada.

  • Skip the soda: Drink more water or at least sugar-free tea or black coffee if you need some caffeine.

  • Vitamins: At the very least, make sure to take a daily multivitamin which can give your body essential vitamins and minerals that you aren’t getting from the foods you’re eating.


Making the most of your time outside will do wonders for your mind and body. Just 15 minutes of intense activity a day can go a long way in keeping your metabolism up.

  • Walk: Whenever you make a pit-stop, get out and walk around as much as possible. This will help stretch your muscles.

  • Get your heart rate up: There are several activities you can do that will strengthen your heart and won’t take much time or special equipment. Try doing jumping jacks for 15 minutes, pushups, planks, lunges, or squats. Many of these exercises will work multiple muscles at a time, making the most of your time.

  • Swim: If you happen to stop at a hotel with a pool, get in, cool off, and swim a couple laps. This will also get your heart rate up and will be easier on your joints.


Another struggle that many truck drivers face is having the time to sleep. And it’s understandable, when you’re trying to meet a deadline, that sleep is something that gets put to the side. When you do sleep, making sure it’s quality sleep.

  • Find a cool, secure place to sleep if the only option is to sleep in your cabin.

  • Use curtains, shades, or sleep masks to make it as dark as possible.

  • Use a fan to keep the space cool.

  • Use earplugs to keep it quiet.

  • Purchase a quality pillow that you can easily carry with you.

Eating better, getting 15 minutes of exercise, and getting quality sleep — doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Remember, even small changes here and there can make a big difference in how you feel and the health of your body.
